Unicef's shop window

How would you make a shop window without budget?

More information at http://www.raichdelrio.com/

When they asked us to "refurnish" the entrance of the Unicef shop in Barcelona with no budget we immediately thought of "epidermical" solutions that could give maximum result with minimum expense.

From our point of view, the problem was that the store was (dis)connected from the street by a dark passage filled with outlet products, far from being a welcoming place.

Studying the shop (beyond the open white door) we discovered the blue, a colour that was immediately taken as a solution. We also discovered that light wasn't in the product, but in the corridor space.

So the solution was: buying some painting and light diffusers. That was our proposal. And our hands, of course.

Walls were painted in blue and white and light was pointed at the product.

So now between the street and the shop there was not a dark passage, but a place where to start thinking of what you will buy inside.

Besides, we created stencils with the Unicef logo, that we placed in the wall, both in positive

And in negative, making visible that it was a Unicef shop (not so clear before the intervention)

So the goal was accomplished: creating an entrance, giving a shop window, and connecting the shop to the street.

Besides, we also created a product-placement system made with old boxes found in the store and the stencils previously used, so that the product can be now showed in a wide range of possibilities.

360º sight of result. You can see the stencils in the walls and boxes, the product placement and the connection between the shop window and the shop.

This project was done with (and thanks to) Pau Gonzalez-Rojas Amat, who commissioned us the job and appears in the photo.

Office for citzen information (OAC)

New space for administration steps. New step concept.

More information at http://www.raichdelrio.com/

We got asked to think the new space for citzen information, a central space where all the administrative steps would be held, a new kind of space where barriers between administration and citzens would minimize, a more active and comfortable space, and show it in two images.

We thought of a section, a roof which would give the functions by its high: a section that starts in the street, the most public area, then come into the office in the waiting areas (so they are active, not closed spaces), then the attention areas, a little bit lower (and then intimate), and then the ceilling would become really low and transform into the wall, giving this way an unitary space, and not any more a line between administration and citzens. And behind this world the private world, this time square and calmed.

So this would be a unitary space defined by it's highs, a common place filled with activity. We also imagined colours in the back, defining the different areas (urbanism, driving licenses...): departments wouldn't be any more a line with a glass, they would be desks arround the space, each of them with a civil servant and a citzen.

Afterwards we got asked to delvelop more this idea and bring it to a possible reality, this time with mesures, highs, number of desks... The basic ideas were kept, and further developed: the colours became a pattern, the points where the ceilling toched the ground became "trees", areas got hierarchized...

As a first step, appeared two main areas, a reception area where fast steps where done and people would get basic information (about the office but also about the administration) and a more intimate area with the main steps. The lobby area (at the right of the image) is higher, with special furniture and people will stay there few time. The attention area (at the left of the image) is lower, with standard furniture and people may stay there longer.

The colour pattern got more developed and becomed a specific pattern that would change in each office. The case study was the Girona office and the basic unit was the shape of Girona at the XII century. The roof marked the different functions, and you can see how it is lower in the attention areas, and grows in the waiting or exposition areas (that this time is not at the entrance but in the middle of the wating area, making it a more active place).

The entrance is higher at the beggining and lower at the end, where some fast steps are done and they need a more intimate space. You can also see a man walking to a computer with internet connection, for telematic steps.

This would be the entrance, with information desk at your right and campaing desk at your left, a special desk that activates only in high demmand operations (as competitions...)

And this would be the rear part, with the attention desk at your left and the waiting area at your right, protected by two trees, one having the information and the other having the public computers.

Once you entered, you could see the door bringing you to the next space.

The trees sometimes toched the ground, but sometimes where just growing from the wall...

In the step zone, the pattern was coloured to define the different departments. A central tree defined again the computer area but also the exhibition place, in the higher zone. Desks and waiting chairs where spread into space, giving a common and active space.

"Riera" conditioning

"Riera" conditioning study in Cambrils.

More information at http://www.raichdelrio.com/

As a study, we got asked to re-think a "riera", a small water path that only brings watter when strong storms happen, being dry most of the year.

First we did was walking it to get to know...

and we realised that, despite being a central element in the town structure, it was completely unused.
and we also realised that it was almost "invisible" from the street level.

So we decided to give some uses to it... by making slopes, places to play... So we decided to make it visible from the street wit some elements, wooden plattforms floating (like leafes in a river) at the street level, connecting both levels.

They would be elements with a stair that would grow to become visible.

With a plattform growing at the street level.

And once we walked the "riera" level and pass underby we would discover that they are made from two different wood layers that filter the light in different ways.

Some would touch both sides, some would toch one, some wouldn't toch any...

And this elemeents would make visible the "riera" from the street, its path...

and from the "riera" level we would discover a new world to use.

From the street they would "float" on the river and give new perspectives of it.

All the desks were designed in 3d and then developed into plan surfaces, and then given to the builder. They were constructed in the workshop into pieces and then assembled on site. Construction on site dured 1 day. Construction into workshop about 2 months.

Petenio's Garden House

Share
Exterior spaces of an existing house.

More information at http://www.raichdelrio.com/

We got asked to think the garden of Petenio's House, a free standing house that belonged to a large plot with 3 different houses of the same family. Time passed, hoses were selled and the plot repareceled.
They suddenly realised that they didn't have a proper garden, a place to eat oustide or to play football with a little bit of intimicy.

First thing was to find that the main problem was that the house and the garden limits had no relation, the house had no exterior space. To create this exterior space, the decission was start from the limits and advance towards the house.

The second decission was to give some kind of qualifyed shadow space. For that we created a cannopy with wood and iron (having in mind that the house itself was treated with iron, givin its characteristical color).

From there it was a matter of adding layers and qualifying spaces: a pavement, rethinking the green spaces, the cannopy, the sourronding walls that will be the limit to advance from, a barbeque, benches...

With that we discovered a new space in the back of the house that would become the principal space by having part of the cannopy, the barbeque, by being the place with more sun...

That is entrance image, where we wanted to add green area, a cannopy directly related to the eating room, and some benches that would be places to stay but also places to storage things, to put flowers on...

That is the resulting image, with the cannopy running towards the discovered space, the bench making the limit...

That is the space we were going to discover, a "back space" we wanted to convert in the "private space"

And we see that giving a cannopy, a brbq and making the floor regular made this a place to be, not just the rear back of the house.

This is the view just turning the house, a space with irregular ground, undefined limits and lack of qualifyed spaces.

Wich we turned in this.
