cover the space to recover the plaza as a public space
new icon in plaza and creation of "museum plaza" with the boatnew museums plaza: the site has a permanently docked ship with exhibition use at the side. the new Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art creates a plaza that will act as communion space at the end of the axis and in collaboration with the ship, allowing to keep the qualities of the breathtaking site and giving enough space for use of the Puente the la Mujer. this plaza will become a lung for the surroundings and will bring public art displays to a part of the city seeking for new life opportunities.
distribution of galleries + big central hall
galleries in the icon volume
undeground galleries below the plaza
display: the museum allows for a wide range of display possibilities suitable for all kind of art, from wide and big spaces for big format art (sculptures or installations) to controlled - small spaces, more suitable of paintings or collages, both with a high amount of flexibility reached through a careful use of the structure. this variation and flexibility will ensure an active experience of the works, essential for a smooth visit through the big amount of exhibition square meters.
experience: from the central hall, able to host exhibitions as the Turbine Hall in TATE modern, the visitor is brought to the rear part of it and then discover the upper galleries (controlled rooms with “as found” qualities) and the down galleries (big wide spaces with upper light) where enjoy for hours the art from second world war until our days.
new public icon: a very massive volume raises from the plaza, becoming a new and distinct piece that talks to the existing buildings by its materiality: a perfect cube of 25m translates the height of the buildings of the axis (around 50m) to the ones of the waterfront (around e16m), while a carved space in his interior will become a new recognisable space in the city tissue.
sustainability: the massive volume allows for several passive control systems as thermal mass insulation, underfloor cooling and heating to help the air conditioning, crossed ventilation when needed, roof gardens, geothermal energy from the river and underground... and of course will include active technologies as solar panels or solar heating.
floor plans
exhibition spaces: the volume hosts the administration and the 5m high galleries with lateral light and above light in the last floor. under the plaza there are big spaces with a controlled upper light.
grand hall: a composed structure is subtracted from the volume creating a breathtaking space in contact with the exterior exhibition space, which together will become a new cultural icon for the city.
circulation: the careful position of the vertical circulation allows for two kinds of model: one entrance for the whole museum or one for each gallery. additional circulation can be done by the outside theatre.
structure: the upper floors hang from a 4m beam (all the upper floor) to allow minimal section of structure and a column free floor used as auditorium.
